Bitis is the genus for a species of vipers that are known for inflating and deflating their bodies while loudly hissing. When I was blocking this shawl, I noticed that the stitch pattern flows in a sinuous motion down the shawl and ends with a shape evocative of a snake’s head. I ended up Googling and finding a lot of cool snakes while trying to figure out a
name for this fantastically bulky shawl that features generous use of double yarn overs.
