• This shawl is worked back and forth in garter stitch. It starts with a provisional cast-on for the Z-shaped center band, then four mitered squares are worked from live stitches and picked up stitches.

• Use stitch markers in two different colors or styles to indicate increasing and decreasing. The markers are referred to in the pattern as increase marker (inc m) and decrease marker dec m).

• Use a removable marker to indicate the right side of the work. Place the marker in the fabric, not on the needle, and move it up as work progresses to keep it in view.

• The stripe sequence is expressed in garter ridges as viewed from the right side of the work. One garter ridge is two knit rows.

• The cast-on row is a wrong side row and does not count as the first ridge.

• When picking up stitches from a side edge, pick up and knit at the rate of one stitch for each garter ridge. For the most unobtrusive result, pick up under a single strand of yarn.
