Believe
This pattern is in the Summer issue of the Addicted to Sock Knitting eZine
The story behind the pattern: I started watching a new show this year called Believe on NBC (sadly it has been canceled). The show follows a girl named Bo with telekenetic powers. The blue butterfly is first seen in the Believe pilot. Not only are butterflies highly symbolic of transformation, the soul and omens (things relevant to Believe), but tie into Bo’s past, present and future. I also believe butterflies represent hope- which is something that Bo has now that her father is in her life- and willing to do anything to protect her and make sure she has a normal childhood.
When I first saw the blue butterfly I knew that I wanted to design a pattern and get someone to dye yarn to match the blue- so I contacted Alicia of Purple Goddess Design. We worked together to get the right blue.. There are butterflies that run up the top of the foot and front of the leg. The back is ribbing with a snake cable running through the middle- the snake represts Dr Skouras- the bad guy of the show.
While this pattern was inspired by the NBC show Believe.. But I found this quote recently and realized that it could also represent the changes in my life, as the butterfly represents rebirth. I have always been drawn to butterflies. Author Trina Paulus once said “How does one become a butterfly?” she asked. “You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.” The snake cable on the back of the sock could represent a caterpillar..
