The Belfast Cardigan is a cross between the trendy grandpa sweater and a smoking jacket. The heavy enveloping cables and plush garter-stitch shawl collar make this cardigan an essential winter layer for men and women.
Sizes
Men’s S (M, L, XL): to fit chest size 34/36 (38/40, 42/44, 46/48)”/86/91 (96/102, 107/112, 117/122) cm.
Finished Measurements
41¾ (47, 51¾, 57)”/106 (119.5, 131.5, 145) cm chest circumference, buttoned. Cardigan shown measures 47”/119.5 cm.
Yarn
Worsted weight yarn (approximate amounts): 1680 (1980, 2200, 2475) yards/1536 (1810, 1170, 1379, 2263) m.
Imperial Yarn Erin (100% wool; 225 yards/206 m in 4 oz/113 g). Color: Rain – 8 (9, 10, 11) skeins.
Needles
Sizes US 7/4.5 mm and US 8/5 mm: 32”/80 cm circular. Double-pointed needles (DPNs) of same sizes.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions
Markers, cable needle, stitch holders, size G/4 mm crochet hook, waste yarn for Provisional cast on, tapestry needle, five 1⅛“/ 3 cm buttons.
Gauge
46 sts and 32 rows of Braid chart = 8¼“/21 cm wide and 5”/13 cm tall on larger needle, after blocking.
Notes
• The body of this cardigan is worked back and forth in one piece to the underarm. The sleeves are worked in the round to the underarm, and then the body and sleeves are joined to work the yoke back and forth. Stitches for the sleeves are picked up along the armhole and sleeves are worked in the round from the top down.
Difficulty: Intermediate. Cable pattern is charted only.
