Pattern for the centre square of a Shetland shawl.

This is a vintage pattern from page 66 of Cornelia Mee’s 1846 book, Exercises in Knitting. It was test knit and updated into modern language on January 13, 2012. The entire book can be viewed on the Gutenberg.org website. The book is a project being recorded and knitted by volunteers at the Librivox site.

Cornelia provides no gauge, yardage, or finishing instructions. Typical of Victorian patterns, it is assumed that the knitter will figure things out, including errata.
