Pattern Description

These heavyweight toe-up socks use slipped stitches and simple cables to create the effect of one colour flowing over the other as two colours are alternated every row using the jogless helical stripes method. These sections alternate with single-colour sections in which one of the wave patterns continues. Elongating the stitches to be slipped helps keep the socks stretchy and comfortable. They also feature a contrast Chinstrap heel, toe, and twisted-rib cuff.

This pattern requires the knitter to be able to knit a small circumference in the round (the instructions are method-neutral) and clearly explains all techniques such as no-cable-needle cables and elongated stitches. Corresponding written instructions are provided for the chart. Links to relevant video tutorials are also provided, so the pattern is accessible to an intermediate sock knitter.

Yarn Requirements and Sizing

Sizes available: Adult Small (Medium, Large) for foot circumferences of 18 (20.5, 23) cm / 7 (8, 9) inches with adjustable finished foot lengths and leg heights

Each Main Colour (per section; double for matching socks): 15 (20, 25) m / 16 (22, 27) yards

Contrast Colour: Total for both socks’ toes/heels/cuffs: 55 (60, 70) m / 60 (70, 80) yards; total for both socks’ heels only: 20 (25, 30) m / 22 (28, 33) yards

This pattern is designed for two or more colours. The texture on the single-colour sections is great for yarn in any colourway, since the slipped elongated stitches stand out well on the fabric. Each section uses less than 10g of yarn, so this is a perfect pattern for mini-skein sets or leftovers. No need to make both socks the same!

These socks are rated 3/5 — Intermediate — on my sock pattern difficulty scale. This is because they require a few uncommon stitches, which are sometimes combined with helical stripes.
