I was inspired by the rosy color of this yarn, in a colorway aptly named Phlox, to design something for springtime. I always like to have a little cowl or shawl to wrap around my neck on chilly spring mornings, and this shawlette is the perfect size to keep with you. The asymetrical triangle shape grows from the tip out and makes customizing the size easy. And both the cable and texture stitch patterns are completely reversible, so there is no wrong side to show.
Use one 200 yard skein to make a kerchief-style shawl that looks great styled with a shawl pin or cuff, as shown. Or knit more repeats and make a larger shawl to wrap around your shoulders.
Skill Level: Advanced beginner. Skills used include increasing in pattern and knitting reversible cables.
Finished Size: 36 in (90 cm) wingspan x 19 in (47.5 cm) wide
Yarn: DK weight wool or wool-blend yarn. Sample shown in Woodsong Farm 100% Finnsheep DK (100% Finn wool; 200 yds/ 4oz (113g), colorway Phlox.
Gauge: 21 sts/ 29 rows = 4 in 10 cm in textured stitch pattern, blocked. The cable measures approximately 1 ¼ in (3 cm) wide.
Needles: US #7 (4.5mm) 24 in (40cm) circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Notions: 3 stitch markers including one locking stitch marker (optional), cable needle, tapestry needle, T-pins and blocking wires (optional)
Notes:
Shawl is worked from the point out, with increases worked every other row.
Stitch patterns are given in both charted and written form.
A note on yarn choice: I used a 100% Finn wool for this shawl, which gives the pattern a teeny bit of drape and sheen while still having great stitch definition. If you use a longwool like Bluefaced Leicester or Romney, or a blend, you’ll get a shawl with some drape; if you use a wool like Merino or Rambouillet, your shawl will be loftier and have more memory.
