The Basic Scarf from Measurements from Valley Yarns is a response to one of the most frequent questions a yarn store employee hears: “How much yarn do I need to make a simple scarf?” However, there are as many different notions about the size, gauge and stitch patterns on a “simple scarf” as there are knitters! So this pattern attempts to settle the debate once and for all and to help every knitter create her or his vision of the ideal, simple scarf.

We’ve weighed and measured dozens of knitted items to create a detailed yardage estimation chart for scarves of many sizes, along with key numbers for calculating yardage for sizes outside its range. We also include detailed instructions for finding gauge and using it to make a scarf with the desired width and five common knitting stitch patterns to mix and match to make the scarf uniquely yours.
