Barnistra (lat. Spartium junceum) is Croatian word for the Mediterranean plant known as Spanish broom. The ancient Greeks, Romans and Carthaginians used Barnistra to make ropes, nets, bags, sails and clothes as well as cover roofs. Pillows and mattresses were filled with flowers, or yellow dye was obtained from them for dyeing fabrics or making pigments for painting.
Barnistra is one of my favourite flowers that delighting me repeatedly with its bright colour and fragrance. For me, it is a symbol of joy; the embrace of the Sun, the awakening of spring, a cloud of twinkling lights…therefore it was my inspiration for the shawl that I named after it.

CONSTRUCTION
Barnistra shawl starts with garter tab cast-on with increases along right and left sides, both on the right and wrong sides. After the cast-on you work garter slip stitch pattern, and later half twisted rib is included. Since the gauge is not the same in two different stitch patterns, the final appearance of the shawl is asymmetrical.
