The striking Barbican Cardigan draws inspiration from Brutalist architecture of the early 20th century and plays with line and direction in unexpected ways. Horizontal bands in a welt stitch pattern lend depth and dimension while vertical lines of slipped-stitch ribbing add visual interest. The cardigan is worked in one piece from the bottom up, then is split at the underarms. The sleeves are picked up from the armholes and worked in the round.

Yarn Blue Sky Fibers Skyland (40% fine highland wool, 30% baby alpaca, 30% silk; 210 yd 192 m/ 3 ½ oz 100 g): #2410 Moonscape, 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10) skeins.

Needles Size 6 (4 mm): 16” and 32” circular (cir) and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

• The body of this sweater is worked back and forth in one piece from the lower edge to the underarm, then the upper fronts and back are worked separately. The sleeves are picked up from the armholes and worked in the round.

• To ensure that the gauge of the two main stitch patterns is not mismatched, causing distortion, do not pull the working yarn too tightly when slipping stitches; maintain a loose and easy tension on the yarn carried across the work.

• A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches.
