Barberry Border
This pattern is in 1892 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 5, p.3 and in 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p. 27. There aren’t many wide edging patterns in Weldon’s and Butterick’s, so I’m pleased to present this to you. I fixed a small error and changed the center portion (11 stitches) from garter stitch to stockinette stitch for more textural interest.
If I work with this pattern again, I would convert at least one of the double yarn overs to a single yarn over due the inability to fully stretch out both double yarn overs.
The 25-stitch edging is 4 inches at its widest at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, double YO, k2tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
48 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 25-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
