We’ve all had those projects that we dive into with the best of intentions, but then get to that dreaded step of picking up hundreds of stitches along the edging. Or sewing the pieces together. I honestly don’t know which is worse. For me, that’s when I stick it in a drawer, never again to see the light of day, especially if it’s laceweight.

I wanted to create a light, flowing sweater to throw on just as an accent piece, or in the heat of summer to guard against excessive air conditioning. Most importantly, it could not have any seaming or picking up stitches. NONE. I tried really hard to avoid extra ends to weave in, too, but there are a few. The front panels are not intended to close, but rather to float away from the body.

The name “Bane” came about when I was in the math phase of the pattern; trying to figure out how to work it all in one piece without losing the design elements of the garment. When I saved it on my computer, I hadn’t thought of a name yet, and just called it “The Bane of My Existence.” The name stuck, and I couldn’t think of another that spoke to me as well.

This pattern has been test-knit in a variety of sizes, and it also knits up nicely in fingering weight yarn.
