Earlier this year, I began dreaming of the ideal gift knit. It had to:

~ be small and simple enough to knit up quickly

~ show off the yarn

~ be customizable for different recipients, if desired

~ be adaptable to many sizes while not requiring an exact fit.

(If you have a list of measurements for all your knit-worthy people, I bow to your incredible foresight and organizational skills. The rest of us mere mortals are just out here winging it!)

I’d like to think that Audrey hits all the marks and then some. ;-)

Depending on what size(s) you knit, you can generally make 2-4 Audrey projects out of the average skein (100g) of fingering-weight yarn. That’s a lot of mileage for one skein!

The low yardage requirement also makes it an excellent stash-buster for lingering skeins of fingering-weight yarn.

Are you ready to cast on?

On to the pattern details:

Lengths: 1 (2, 3, 4)

Instructions are given for four different lengths. Lengths 1 and 2 are intended to wrap once around the neck. They also make great headbands and hair wraps!

Lengths 3 and 4 are longer and intended to wrap twice around the neck or to be worn long.

To fit a neck circumference of 15.5”/ 39cm and under, knit Size 1 for a single wrap or Size 3 for a double wrap.

To fit a neck circumference of 16”/ 40cm and over, knit Size 2 for a single wrap or Size 4 for a double wrap.

Finished Measurements:

Approx. Lengths: 30 (35, 47.5, 52.5)” / 75 ( 87, 119, 131)cm

Length is easily adjustable to fit a range of neck circumferences. Modification notes are included.

Width: 2.75”/ 7cm.

Needles: US2/ 2.75mm DPNs, straight or circular needles.

Gauge: 30 sts and 34 rows = 4”/ 10cm in garter st.

◊ The Audrey neckerchief is knit flat, primarily in garter stitch, with a clean i-cord edge and a delicate stockinette motif. It’s perfect for showcasing that special skein of yarn that’s been waiting for just the right project.

◊ The stockinette/garter motif creates the perfect backdrop for an
embroidered accent or beads while also being lovely as-is. Let your
creativity take over, or enjoy the simple elegance.

◊ Audrey is suitable for most knitters, from adventurous beginners to advanced.

◊ If you’re unfamiliar with i-cord and i-cord edges, I created a short video tutorial that will walk you through the beginning of this pattern step-by-step.

◊ If you’d like to learn more about the pattern or the yarn it was designed it, check out this video chat with Michelle of Olive & Two Ewe.
