The At Sea Guernsey sweater is knitted in the traditional
manner, circularly and without seams. The pattern
begins with the classic Channel Island Cast-on and split
garter welts, which are knitted flat. The welts are then
joined circularly and knitting continues with a stockinette
stitch area where initials can be included. It is in
this area that lengthening or shortening can be done
with ease. Underarm gussets grow out of the cabled side
seams.

At the midpoint of the gussets, the seam sts and the gusset
sts are put onto stitch holders while the front and
back of the gansey are each knitted flat. The shoulders
are then joined and a neck gusset is worked to allow for
the depth of the neck. A rolled or ribbed crew collar finishes
off the body. The sleeve stitches are picked up around the
armhole and knitted down to the cabled cuff, decreasing
away the top half of the underarm gusset, then decreasing
the sleeve stitches. Lengthening or shortening of
the sleeve can be easily accomplished in this stockinette
stitch area just above the cuff.
