I love the look of all over stranded colourwork socks, but sometimes that kind of pattern can be a bit intimidating. Astrid socks are a mix of fun bands of colourwork and stripes combined with large sections of a classic ribbed sock. They are a great way to dip your toe into this style of sock for a beginner, or a pattern that more experienced knitters will zoom through. Either way, Astrid socks are super fun to knit and an adorable pair to have peeking out of your boots.

PATTERN NOTES:

• It is common for stranded colourwork to be tighter than stockinette knitting. You may want to go up a needle size for the colourwork bands to keep the same gauge as the main body of the sock.

• My size 2 pair of socks used the following yarn amounts:

  MC - 50g Marled work sock CC1 - 10g Hey Girl CC2 - 10g Geek in the Pink

• This pattern is written for magic loop style knitting, but is easily adapted to DPNs or small circular needles.

• If you are using DPNs to knit instead of magic loop, split N1 and N2 using two DPNs each (4 needles total).

Astrid Socks are:

• knit from the top down
• have a heel flap and gusset with my favourite square heel
• have a round barn style toe
• they are an excellent choice for a beginner colourwork sock. The simple charts do not require you to catch any floats and there are large portions of ribbed sock in between small colourwork bands.
• use two small amounts of contrasting yarns for the colourwork. A 20g mini skein for each CC colour is plenty for all sizes.
