Astrid and Alva Dala Horses
The Dala Horse has a sentimental place in the hearts of many Scandinavians, as the Swedish wooden statuette represents strength, faithfulness, wisdom, and dignity. The horse has a sentimental place in my heart too; my Grandma had a red horse that sat on her mantelpiece, and it reminds me of fun sleepovers with my grandparents as a child. I have made a knitted version of the horse, with a saddle and reins in primary colours with embroidered details.
Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the horses are knit in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round).
NEEDLES:
A pair of 3mm single pointed knitting needles (US 2.5).
RECOMMENDED YARN:
Yarnsmiths Create DK; double knitting/light worsted weight; 100% acrylic; less than a 100g/290m skein in each colour.
NOTIONS:
Tapestry needle, toy filling, and stitch markers.
SIZES:
One size only - 17cm long x 19cm tall.
TECHNIQUES:
For very confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, plus embroidery and seaming to finish.
