Askew is an improvisational shawl for the adventurous knitter. Basic instructions are given to establish the wingspan of your shawl, create the shapes, and securely connect the shapes together. After two tiers of practice squares, where you learn how the basic construction works, you’re off on your own to make a shawl that suits your creative spirit.

Finished Measurements
With yarn and at gauge given, piece is 18 inches (45.5 cm) at deepest point by 64 inches (162.5 cm) wide.

Yarn Substitution
If substituting yarn, look for self-striping sock yarns designed to have 5–6 row stripes in a standard sock.

This pattern is also perfect for using up small amounts of yarn or for mini skeins. If working this option, consider changing colors every time you change to a new shape.

If using a different yarn, consider using a needle size that is 1–2 sizes larger than the recommended size. The gauge should
be loose enough to drape nicely, but dense enough to maintain the square shapes.
