For a looser fit on the hat, choose US size 9 needles (or size needed to obtain gauge of 4 sts/in) for a 20” finished circumference.

The pattern was originally written for the 2013 Minnesota Yarn Shop Hop, using custom-dyed Lanaloft Worsted from Brown Sheep. These skeins were a bit larger than the commercially available Lanaloft, being 4 oz (180 yards). Out of 4 oz. of any Aran weight yarn, you should be able to get the hat and mitts - and maybe the pompon as well.
