I was in Harney County, OR with a couple of friends, headed to the Malheur Wildlife Refuge on a spring birding trip. We had stopped at the side of the road to scan a pond hoping to find wading birds along the muddy edges. As I stood there I gradually became aware of what I can only describe as a thrumming. I felt it before I actually heard it; the air was alive with something. We searched the horizon, trying the locate the source as the intensity of the sound increased. And then, there it was, the largest flock of geese I’d ever seen. I stood slack- jawed as the mass of snow geese came toward us. We were cast into shadow as the living canopy passed overhead. Their honking mixed with the sound of air running through their feathers with each wingbeat created a cacophony so intense that my own body vibrated with it. I laughed with pure, wild joy!
