Are You OAKay?
ARE YOU OAKAY?
Yes, thank you for asking: are you OAKay?
This deliciously cosy and delightfully squishy cowl is made using standard double-knitting for the bands of oak leaves and acorns that twine merrily around the top and bottom edges, and 2x2 honeycomb double-knitted brioche, which is a technique that will no doubt be new to you, but don’t worry: it’s very closely related to double-knitting, so if you can do one, you can definitely do the other!
The honeycomb section in the centre of the cowl gives the fabric a rare bounce and spring that you’d be hard pressed to find in any other knitted fabric.
Combining different textures and techniques in the same project is one of my favourite things in the world, and I LOVE this cowl so much! I’ve had many people clamouring for me to get on with writing this pattern up, so finally, here it is!
You can knit this cowl in your favourite Autumn colours, for a really beautiful woodland feel, if you like, or, why not go wild, and choose whatever colour palette makes your heart happy? It’s your cowl, after all!
2x2 honeycomb double-knitted brioche is a WONDERFUL technique, for creating a reversible honeycomb fabric, somewhat akin to a double moss stitch, but in a double-knitted-brioche texture that not only feels amazing, it also has huge amounts of visual interest as well.
This pattern contains full written step-by-step tutorials, for ALL of the techniques used in the Are You OAKay? cowl, including full instructions for how to do double-knitting, as well as the specific cast on and cast off used.
The tutorials for transitioning from double-knitting to 2x2 honeycomb double-knitted brioche and back again are extensively detailed, as are the instructions for working in 2x2 itself, so even if you have never come across these techniques before, you don’t need to worry: everything you could need is contained right within the pattern pages.
EXCLUSIVE VIDEO TUTORIAL
I’ve included links to an exclusive video tutorial, showing all the different aspects of the 2x2 honeycomb double-knitted brioche used in the pattern. Just click on the link in the pdf or scan the QR code to access the private video on my YouTube channel. The video is only available to purchasers of this pattern. Don’t say I never give you anything!
Sockmatician’s Double-Knitted Brioche
If you are interested in learning more about double-knitted brioche, what can be done with it, and how it differs from its cousin, traditional two-pass brioche, check out my MASSIVE eBook, Sockmatician’s Double-Knitted Brioche, available from my Ravelry store.
Double-knitted brioche is worked like double-knitting: using both yarns at the same time, and working each row in only one pass. This halves your knitting time, compared to traditional brioche. It is also 100% reversible, so it looks exactly the same on both sides, in a way that ordinary brioche does not. What’s not to love about that?
The eBook contains 464 pages of background, tutorials, step-by-steps, detailing hundreds of different techniques, with links to over 90 exclusive video tutorials. There are also 16 patterns, including mitts, legwarmers, hats, cowls, scarves, a blanket, and massive lace shawl and a huge poncho. The patterns alone make the eBook worth its price (only £25!), so with everything else, it really is the best value for money you could hope for.
If you like the Are You OAKay? cowl, I reckon you’ll get LOADS of joy and pleasure from reading Sockmatician’s Double-Knitted Brioche.
