Antifreeze
The Antifreeze socks are one of the 11 engaging patterns from Penguin: a Knit Collection by Anna Maltz - a printed book packed with patterns, photographs, illustrations and stories, all inspired by penguins. Available from annamaltz.com and your LYS.
Thick and stripy, who could ask for more? These basic top-down socks are knitted in DK weight wool – extra cosy and quicker to make. The trickiest they get is making sure your cast-on is stretchy enough (to get your foot through) and an afterthought heel (which isn’t tricky at all). To avoid stripes that jog, a vertical ‘seam’ runs down the fully ribbed leg. The foot is worked in stocking stitch. Given in 3 widths, with 3 suggested lengths, which you can mix as you wish.
SIZES
S (M, L)
Finished center of foot circumference: 21 (23, 25)cm
8½ (9, 9½)”- To be worn with 2-3 cm / 1” negative ease.
YARN
A: Navia Sock (DK/worsted weight; 80% wool, 20% nylon;
120m / 131yds per 50g)
B: Navia Trio (DK/worsted weight; 100% wool, 120m / 131yds per 50g)
Navia Sock and Trio are the same weight, but Sock contains a strengthening 20% nylon. It is used for the areas that experience the most wear: heels and toes. Trio is used for the cuff and foot of the sock as it comes in a wider range of shades, including the pale pink and bright yellow of penguin feet.
For the Yellow Striped version
A: Dark Marl (N511) x 2
B: Curry (N336) x 2
For the Pink Striped version
A: Light Marl (N510) x 2
B: Pastel Pink (N332) x 2
I specify 2 balls of each colour to play it safe, but certain pick ‘n’ mix combos can be done using just a single ball in each colour (or you could make the leg section shorter if you are trying to stick to 2 balls of yarn). If you don’t mind playing yarn chicken, you can use 2 balls of the yarn A and 1 ball of yarn B for the stripes, heels and toes.
TENSION
25 sts x 35 rows = 10cm / 4” over stocking stitch on 3.25mm needles
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
3.25mm (US 3 / UK 10) DPNs or circular needle long enough for magic loop method
4mm (US 6 / UK 8) DPNs or circular needle long enough for magic loop method
