Anni's hat and cowl
Inspired by the work of Anni Albers, Anni is a hat and cowl set knit in 3-colors of fingering weight yarn. The colorwork alternates between garter stitches and stockinette stitches to create a textured fabric and fascinating checkerboard motif!
Here I have used Julie Asselin’s stunning Leizu Fingering in colors Potiron, Wendy and Yellow Tang. I love how the variations in the dyes adds to the overall effect of the pattern stitch!

YARN
- 3 skeins (1 skein in each of 3 colors, A, B, C) Julie Asselin Leizu Fingering 90% SW Merino and 10% Silk; 475 yds/438m per 4 oz/ 115gr skein or
- Approx 250 (300) yds/230 (275)m each A, B and C for Hat and Cowl set of fingering weight yarn; approx ⅓ used for Hat and ⅔ used for Cowl.
NEEDLES
- US sizes 3 and 4 (3.25mm and 3.5mm) 16”/40cm circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge and 1 size smaller.
- US size 4 (3.5mm) dpns or size needed to obtain gauge (hat only).
GAUGE
28 sts and 44 rnds = 4”/10cm in Anni Pattern using larger needle(s), blocked.
Take time to check gauge.
CONSTRUCTION
The Hat is worked in the round from the brim to the crown. The Cowl is worked in the round from bottom to top.
