I continue to be intrigued by fingerless gloves and their “engineering” or shape constraints. For this pair I have focused on the thumb gusset and have amended my shaping to allow for a more natural and snug fit across the palm and thumb. This necessitated a quicker increase sequence for the gusset base than I had previously used, followed by some Kitchener stitching for a really nice thumb shaping/fit.

Non-horizontal repeat patterns have also been intriguing me lately, so you will see some of these on the back of the hands here and on the palms. These patterns all have strong diagonal components, so of course I had to offer mirror images for all of the patterns for the left and right hands. I feel it makes for some rich patterning that makes these gloves very interesting to look at while still retaining some elegant subtlety.

Three sizes are given: S, M and L. Size S fits a person with a wrist size of 5-6 inches, M fits 7 inches and L fits 8-9 inches. Note that the fit is snug ( = negative ease) so do not size down if you are unsure.

This pattern is suitable for the adventurous intermediate or advanced knitter comfortable with following a chart for colorwork, using DPNS (or a suitable alternate needle set up) and has mastered the Kitchener stitch. I have included several tutorial links that should be sufficient to help most knitters with some of the unusual or lesser used techniques that appear in this project : a provisional cast-on, and a folded picot hem. I have knit these entirely with double pointed needles but have generalized the instructions so that knitter who use other needle set-ups can still follow the directions.
