An autumnal romance
Fall in love with cool, crisp days, hot chocolate and crunchy leaves- it is easier to love cold weather when you are wrapped up in cosy wool accessories. Using just a small amount of a soft and warm DK weight yarn this earwarmer will help keep you snug as you enjoy the cooler months.
The headband is knitted flat in two pieces, then grafted at the top of the head. The two lower edges are sewn together.
Needles: 3.5 mm / US size 4 needles for working flat.
Yarn: 30 (35, 40) g double knitting weight yarn, 225 m per 100 g.
Sample shown in West Yorkshire Spinners, “Fleece” DK, 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, 225 m per 100 g in “light brown”.
Notions: Tapestry needle, cable needle (optional), stitch holder or spare needle.
Skills: Cast on, working flat, knit, purl, slipped stitches, increasing stitches, cabling, grafting stitches, sewing seams (little ones), weaving in ends.
Gauge: 25 stitches and 36 rows over 10 cm in moss stitch. Gauge is not critical for this project, choose needles that give a fairly dense fabric for warmth, sizing can be tweaked when making.
Sizing: Pattern gives stitch counts for small (medium, large) adult size; approximately equivalent to 42 (46, 50) cm / 16 ½ (18, 19 ½)” knitted circumference. Aim for a size a little smaller than your actual measurements for a cosy, non-slip fit. Instructions are given for adjusting the size during the pattern.
