Fhdc- Foundation Half Double Crochet- tutorial
Chain 2 (does NOT count as first fhdc). YO and insert hook in 2nd chain from hook. YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through one loop creating a chain, (this is an important step but easy to forget), YO again and pull through all three loops on hook. This completes the first fhdc. To stitch the next fhdc, YO and insert the hook into the chain made in the previous fhdc and repeat from until the desired amount of sts are achieved.

NOTES
- Pattern is written starting in size Extra Small with the additional sizes shown in parenthesis- XS (S, M, L, 1x)(2x, 3x, 4x, 5x). If only one number is shown it pertains to all sizes.
- Ch 2 (and ch 1) are not considered the first stitch, the first hdc (or sc) will be placed in the same st as the ch 2 (or ch 1).
- Stitch counts take place at the end of each row where a change takes place. Stitch counts for this design are listed in clusters. Each cluster consists of sc, ch 2, 2 hdc in the same st. Beginning and ending clusters consist of 2 hdc in the same st. The st count will not differentiate between types of clusters.
- Each cluster will be worked in the ch-2 space of the cluster in the previous row.
- Increases are worked over two rows. The increase is not changed in the stitch count until after both increase pattern rows are worked.
- The sides/panels will be marked as they will be when worn. This will be the opposite if you are left handed.
- The body and sleeves of the Amaretti Cardigan uses a J/6.0mm hook. Final edging uses a I/5.5mm hook.
CONSTRUCTION NOTES
The Amaretti Cardigan is constructed in 3 panels; 2 front panels and a back panel, all worked hem to shoulder, which are then seamed at the shoulders. The sleeves are worked cuff to shoulder and then seamed on to the sides of the cardigan. The sleeves and side panels are then seamed. Final edging is added to the seamed garment.
GAUGE
Because this stitch pattern can be difficult to measure I have created a simple ‘practice gauge’ swatch for you to work prior to starting the garment. I have also listed the gauge ‘in pattern’ so you can check your progress as you go.
Practice Gauge- using J/6.0mm
13 sts and 10.5 rows = 4”
Worked in hdc- begin with fhdc for continuity
In Pattern (body)
5 clusters and 9 rows = 4”
