A classic seaman’s gansey adapted with feminine shaping adds tomboy charm to any wardrobe. Alvy features coin cables on a ground of double moss stitch, knit from a combination of charts and written directions. The pullover is worked in the round in Shelter from a tubular cast on. Waist shaping, set-in sleeves, and a traditional 2-4” of ease keep the silhouette flattering. The cuffs, hem, and shoulders are embellished with welt details for an extra touch of nautical flair.

Construction

The body is worked circularly from the hem to the underarms, then the front and back are worked flat separately. The sleeves are worked circularly from the cuff to the underarm, then the cap is worked flat. The sleeves are sewn into the armholes. The neckband is picked up and worked after garment assembly.

Gauge

19 stitches & 28 rows = 4″ in stockinette stitch or Double Moss Stitch with Size A needle(s), after blocking

Note: Be sure to check both gauges.

10-stitch panel from Coin Cable Chart measures 1½” wide with Size A needle(s), after blocking

Needles

Size A (for Main Fabric)
One each 16″ and 32″ circular needles and one set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size needed to obtain gauge listed
Suggested Size: 5 mm (US 8)

Size B (for Ribbing and Welts)
One each 16″ and 32″ circular needles and one set of DPNs, three sizes smaller than Size A
Suggested Size: 3¾ mm (US 5)

Size C (for Tubular Cast On & Neckband only)
One each 16″ and 32″ circular needles, one size smaller than Size B
Suggested Size: 3½ mm (US 4)

32″ circular needle can be used instead of DPNs or 16″ circular needle if using the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the round (i.e. Sleeves or Neckband).

Note: If you have adjusted the needle size to obtain the correct gauge, it may or may not be necessary to make a matching adjustment to the needle size used for Tubular Cast On due to variance in individual work. You may wish to test your chosen cast-on method on your swatch.
