Welcome to 2023 Knitters’ Day Out Cowl Knit-A-Long – Along the Susquehanna!

Since 1985, KDO has provided a weekend of high-quality knitting instruction in Central Pennsylvania. The goal of KDO is to provide affordable and accessible education to keep knitting traditions alive and flourishing. Our motto is “Knitting Friendships Together.”

Cowl Description
The Susquehanna River originates from Otsego Lake in New York and is joined by a second branch coming from western Pennsylvania. It flows for 444 miles south through Pennsylvania and into the Chesapeake Bay. Where the river passes Enola (the home of KDO), it is a mile wide. It is the longest river in the East Coast states. Knit the landscape! The cowl starts at the bottom with the river, then progresses upward through train tracks, the road, plowed fields, and finally a sky full of birds. Instructions are for a single loop cowl that fits loosely. To make it larger or smaller, add or subtract a multiple of 12 stitches.

Supplies & Gauge Information
gauge: 11 sts/2inches (5 cm) measured over stockinette
yarn: ~ 350 yds DK or light worsted
needles: 16-, 20-, or 24-inch circular needle in size you need to achieve gauge

Pattern Information
The pattern is presented both in charts and in words. When using the charts, read from right to left on every round, and from bottom to top. The unshaded part of the chart indicates the stitches that are to be repeated to form the pattern; the shaded squares are there just to show you how the pattern looks when several repeats have been worked. The pink column shows the round you are on. If you choose to follow the written instructions, take a look at the charts from time to time to make sure your results are as intended. To print out the charted instructions only, print pages 3 - 5. To print out the written instructions only, print pages 6 - 8.
