Love is love, and sometimes comes in the form of a squishy garter stitch scarf with a cool graphic motif!

This scarf is knit modularly, meaning the pieces are joined as you go. It is not particularly difficult but lets you practice a variety of techniques, including: basic increasing and decreasing, knitting flat and in the round, picking up sts, slip stitch edges, 3-needle bind-off, casting on with long-tail and backward loop methods, and grafting (only 3 sts!)

It can be knit in any worsted weight yarn (or another weight if desired, which will however affect the finished size), but it is important that your stitch to row gauge ratio in garter stitch is close to 1:2 after blocking. I’ve suggested a few yarns I am familiar with above, but there are many other options. Hand dyed and self striping yarns would be fantastic too!

You will require 2 circular needles of the same size that give you the correct gauge. You will also need 2 straight or circular needles several sizes smaller than the gauge needles for picking up sts.

My samples shown are knit in Brooklyn Tweed Shelter. The small version is in ‘fossil’ (background colour (BC)), with ‘faded quilt’ (CC1) and ‘camper’ (CC2). The large version is shown in ‘sweatshirt’ (BC) with ‘long johns’ (CC!), ‘almanac’ (CC2), ‘hayloft’ (CC3), and ‘cast iron’ (CC4).

Yarn requirements (yds / m):

Small:
BC - 270 / 250
CC1 - 110 / 120
CC2 - 55 / 60

Large:
BC - 390 / 360
