A versatile hat pattern, knit slightly large for a slouchy fit with the option to fold the brim or with some negative ease for a more traditional fitted look. The reversible cable means that with careful weaving in of ends the hat can also be worn ‘in-side-out’.
Yarn
75 (85, 105, 110, 130, 135, 155) m / 82 (93, 115, 120, 142, 148, 170) yds of worsted weight yarn approx.
Sample knit in -
Grey: Dream in Color, Classy (100% Superwash Merino; 229 m/250yd, 113g/4 oz: Grey Tabby 1 skein).
Blue: Cascade, 220 Wool (100% Wool, 201m/220yd, 100g/3.5oz: Summer Sky 1 skein).
Needles
4.5mm (US 7) 40cm / 16” circular knitting needle. (Smallest sizes use smaller circular needle or DPN)
4.5mm (US 7) double pointed needles.
Size
Hat circumference: 32 (37, 44.5, 48, 55, 60, 62) cm / 12¾ (14½, 17½, 19, 21¾, 23¼, 24½)” (Circumference measurement based on tension in pattern.)
Hat Height: 14 (16.5, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27) cm / 5½ (6½, 7¼, 8, 8¾, 10, 10¾)”
To fit approximately:
Slouch – Prem (NB, 6mth, 12mth, Child, Adult, Lge Adult)
Fitted – NB (6mth, 12mth, Child, Adult, Lge Adult, Extra Lge Adult).
For a slouch fit choose a size which gives slight positive ease, for a fitted hat choose a size which gives 2.5-5cm/1-2” negative ease.
Sample size:
Grey - 60cm/23¼”
Blue – 55cm / 21¾”
Both modelled on a 56cm/22” head.
Tension / Gauge
18 sts x 28 rows over 10cm/4” in stocking stitch.
22 sts x 28 rows over 10cm/4” in cable and stocking stitch pattern slightly stretched.
