All Panic No Disco
Originally created for the Indie Untangled Happy Wool Year box.
No need to panic in the cold weather! This cute hat keeps you cozy while making the most of color a changing yarn. It features an easy double dip stitch where you only use one strand of yarn on any given round (no stranding), and is a quick knit.
Written in 3 sizes that can be worked at multiple gauges and different weights of yarn, the pattern can be worked with whatever you have on hand.
For example, if you’re using sportweight such as the Making Tracks Lite, your gauge is likely to be ~22 sts/4”
At 22 sts/4” (likely gauge for sportweight yarn), sizes s(m, l) measure 17.5(20.4, 23.3)“
At 21 sts/4” (likely gauge for sport or DK yarn), sizes s(m, l) measure 18.3(21.3, 24.4)“. See the 3rd photo from the top in Miss Babs Yowza as an example of this gauge.
At 20 sts/4” (likely gauge for DK yarn) sizes s(m, l) measure 19.2(22.4, 25)“
At 19 sts/4” (likely gauge for worsted weight yarn), sizes s(m, l) measure 20.2(23.5, 27)“
At 18 sts/4” (likely gauge for a heavy worsted/light aran), sizes s(m, l) measure 21.3(25, 28.4)“. See the 2nd photo from the top, worked in Making Tracks DK/worsted weight for an example of this gauge.
Some of these sizes are getting outside the realm of head sizes (like 28” is going to be too large for most people’s heads), but you get the drift:
If you want a ~21” hat out of heavy. worsted weight, it’s going to better to knit a size small at 18 sts/4” than to work at size medium at 21 sts/4”. This is because 18 sts/4” is a more likely and typical gauge for that weight of yarn than 21 sts/4” in the dip st pattern.
You’ll need to keep an eye on your row gauge, but the pattern includes directions for ending a a couple different places in the pattern, so it’s easy to add or subtract length.
