The Sparky Shawlette is an ideal project for knitters of all levels. For a beginning knitter, this is a great design to make your first foray into lace knitting. Nothing is easier to knit in the lace world than good old feather & fan, a traditional way to add not only lace, but also wonderful movement to a knit design. The design is worked on the miter, starting with only a few stitches on the needle, and adding 4 stitches every other row, with the central lace panel designated by stitch markers. Because of this construction, the piece quickly gains length, which is always encouraging (who doesn’t love instant gratification?) The two yarns, Sparky and Tweedy, are worked in intuitive stripes, with 4 rows knit in each yarn; there is no need to cut the yarns as you work, as you can easily strand the yarn not in play alongside the right edge as you trade out textures. The piece culminates in a glorious fanfare of all lace, with the bottom several inches constructed entirely in the feather & fan lace, still alternating stripes of the two yarns.

For the more experienced knitter, this is a super fun and relaxing project, a knit-while-you-watch-a movie kind of pattern, or a great companion for traveling.
