Akua's Alphabet
Akua’s Alphabet is an exercise in minimalism, using crochet’s sculptural capabilities to create letters.
Inspired by some of the work I saw created during the NatCroMo Freeform CAL 2012, I began to create letters so that I could sign and write on my crochet pieces, using the same medium as the rest of the work.
Each letter takes about 5 minutes. I find I spend as much time weaving in the ends as I do creating the letters.
The amount of yarn for each letter is very small.
Level
The level for this pattern set is intermediate. The letters are each/all made from one continuous thread -- there’s no cutting until the letter is completed.
They are best presented after a bit of blocking -- I dampen, shape, and then allow mine to dry.
While not intended to be difficult, the one continuous thread and shaping in a small space make it a bit challenging.
I used a F/3.75mm hook and worsted weight yarn to get letters that are 2” tall. You could use any weight yarn you want, but I recommend following the formula of using a smaller hook than usually prescribed for the yarn e.g. for dk I use an E/3.5mm; for sport weight a D/3.25 or C/3mm; for heavy worsted use a G/4mm, etc.
