ASH-ling (noun) : a dramatic representation of a vision, dream

Aisling is a Gaelic word which seemed fitting for this ethereal, fluffy sweater knit in an Ireland-inspired colorway. This pattern was designed specifically to be knit in fluffy yarn – those containing blends of baby Suri alpaca, mohair, or even fluffy lightweight cashmere wool. These yarns are often used held together with another strand of yarn to give beautiful color effects, but this sweater is knit with a single strand of fluffy laceweight (or even a light fingering weight) yarn, to give a weightless sweater that is as warm as it is dreamlike.

This sweater is knit from the bottom up, beginning flat to work a split body hem and then worked in the round up the body. The front and back are then split at the underarm and worked flat, with shaping around the shoulder and neck worked using German short rows and the Sloped Bind-Off. The front and back are joined in a Three-Needle Bind-Off at the top of the shoulders, and stitches are picked up to work the collar, which is doubled and permanently joined. Finally, stitches are picked up for the set-in sleeves, using German short rows to angle them downward before working in the round to shape the sleeves as you work toward the cuff. There is no seaming involved in this sweater, and all instructions are written.

Sizes: finished bust circumference of 32, 36, 40 (44, 48, 52, 56) (60, 64, 68, 72) inches, or 81, 91, 102 (112, 122, 132, 142) (152, 163, 173, 183) cm

• Recommended ease: 3-8 inches / 7.5-20 cm of positive ease

• The sample was knit in size 40”, and modeled on a 34.5” bust (giving ~5.5” / 14 cm of positive ease)

• Size US 3 / 3.25 mm 16” and 32” circular knitting needles – for collar and body hem

• Size US 3 / 3.25 mm DPNs or long circular needles for magic loop – for sleeve cuffs

• Size US 4 / 3.5 mm 32” circular knitting needles – main fabric needle

• Size US 4 / 3.5 mm DPNs or long circular needles for magic loop – for sleeves

Yarn: fluffy lace-weight (or light fingering-weight) yarn, holding one strand alone throughout the sweater:

• 930, 1040, 1160 (1270, 1390, 1500, 1615) (1730, 1850, 1960, 2080) yards, or 850, 950, 1060 (1160, 1270, 1370, 1475) (1580, 1690, 1790, 1900) meters

• Sample used Explorer Knits & Fibers Suri Alpaca Lace, in colorway Fiadh

Gauge: 24 sts x 32 rows = 4” x 4” stockinette stitch on main fabric needle, worked flat and blocked lightly

Notions: 2 stitch markers, additional needle Size US 4 / 3.5 mm or smaller for Three-Needle Bind-Off, (recommended) removable stitch markers or row counters, tapestry needle
