Aestas Wrap
Aestas (Latin for “summer) is a beaded lace wrap, with a garter stitch border decorated with picots. The pattern is perfect for thinner thick and thin handspun yarns with subtle tonal variations, but you can use any fingering or sport weight yarn. Beaded decreases accentuate the geometric pattern.
Aestas is worked from the bottom up using a picot cast on. A few rows of garter stitch make up the bottom border. The wrap has a garter stitch border decorated with picot stitches. Aestas is finished with a garter stitch border and a picot cast off.
Skill Level: Advanced. Knit, purl, lacework, picot stitches, beaded decreases.
Notions:
- 704 6/0 seed beads, about 48 g
- 0.75-1.0mm/US 10-13 crochet hook for hooking beads onto yarn, or preferred beading tool
- yarn needle
Notes:
- Aestas can be worked either from either charted or written instructions.
- For a wider wrap or scarf, the lace pattern is a multiple of 27 stitches + 1. Each repeat uses 32 beads. If making the scarf wider, use stitch columns 15-42 for one repeat.
- If you are using a thick and thin handspun, make sure the thickest portions can still accommodate 6/0 seed beads.
Special Stitches:
b-k2tog: beaded k2tog (Knit one stitch, then place bead on next stitch. Return worked stitch to left needle and pass beaded stitch over). 1 stitch decrease
b-skpo: beaded skpo (Place bead on stitch and slip this stitch. Knit 1, pass beaded stitch over). 1 stitch decrease
b-k3tog: beaded k3tog (K2tog, place bead on next stitch. Return k2tog’ed stitch to left needle and pass beaded stitch over). 2 stitch decrease
b-sssk: beaded sssk (Slip 1 stitch knitwise, place bead on this stitch. Skpo, pass beaded stitch over). 2 stitch decrease
