A few updates have been made to accommodate feedback on some of the sizes running too small. The pattern now includes a size chart, additional size (2/3) and added length in thumbs and hand.

These mitts were born the Fall we bought our ranch in Idaho with the anticipation of cooler seasons, a transition from our less than wool worthy California climate. Every few months we would road trip from San Francisco to North Idaho and it was a time we embraced with audiobooks, good talks and lots of knitting. These mitts made their appearance somewhere on the Oregon Scenic Byway, a favorite part of that long drive, inspired by the changing colors of Fall and the small farm yarns I’ve come to love so much. It’s a simple knit with character, and I hope you enjoy knitting them as much as I have. -Ashley

Materials
1 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 skein in Wing and a Prayer 100% Shetland wool yarn; DK weight; 140 yds, 50g, shown in “Moorit” and “Silver Birch”, or, approx 40 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 130, 140, 160 yds of dk weight yarn.

*I’ve found that many small farm yarns such as this one can vary in weight. If you’re having trouble attaining gauge with whatever yarn you choose, vary your needle size or use a worsted weight yarn instead…just make sure to get gauge for proper fit.

US 2/2.75mm, DPNs or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers
Waste yarn or stitch holder

Sizes
0-3m 6-12m, 2/3, 4/5, 6/7, 8/10, adult sm, adult med, adult lrg. Shown in size 5-7 and adult med.

Gauge
22 sts x 28 row/rnds = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch

Notes
Instructions are given for smallest size, with larger sizes in parenthesis. When only 1 number is given, it applies to all sizes.

Included is a thumbed and thumbless option for
sizes 0-3m and 6-12m. You’ll make this decision
once you reach the ‘Acorn Body’ section.

Cupcaked Acorn Mitts Notes
To make a ‘cupcaked’ version of these mitts, select a yarn for the base of the mitt. Knit in this yarn until 1 row before you begin the ‘Acorn Top’ section.

Switch to a yarn for the top of the ‘cupcake’. I used a fluffy handspun, but anything will do. Knit the last row of the ‘Acorn Body’ and then continue onto the ‘Acorn Top’.

Once you’ve completed the mitt, PU 1 st in the top of the mitt. Then follow these directions for a ‘bobble’. https://www.craftsy.com/blog/2014/02/how-to-knit-a-bobble...

After you’ve bound off the bobble, pull the end through the top of the mitt. I chose to weave it through the sides of the bobble and down through the top to create a more round bobble. You could also make a little pom pom if you wished.
