Re-issued in 2021 as part of our Bluestocking project, with new kits available in a beautiful John Arbon yarn.

This sideways-knit, garter stitch hap with its sweeping openwork points was designed as a retirement gift for my good friend, colleague, and doctoral supervisor, Professor Harriet Guest. Harriet is the author of several wonderful books about eighteenth-century literature and culture. She is also a knitter.

The pattern includes two full sets of instructions: the first for knitters who prefer working from a chart and the second for those who prefer written instructions.

Construction
This hap is knit sideways, from end to end. The edging is worked together with the garter stitch body, and a long, shallow shape is achieved by working increases (or decreases) prior to the edging. The dimensions of this hap are flexible, and the pattern is perfect for making the most of a special skein of yarn: simply weigh your skein carefully before knitting, and follow the percentage instructions in the pattern.
