A Celtic Quilt 1 combines a scrumptious collection of cabled blocks into a quilt landscape ~ an heirloom knit to be treasured.

Pattern Notes
The quilt itself consists of 9 cabled blocks; however, the pattern includes a 10th bonus block. The 10th block may be used as an extra choice when choosing the nine blocks for the quilt or may be used to create a coordinating pillow front (while directions to create pillow not included, instructions are provided for working the Outer Border around a single block). All blocks are identical in size and therefore may be assembled in any combination; the blocks are also square allowing the blocks to be oriented either vertically or horizontally.

Both Charts and Written Directions are provided for each block - charts are included in the body of this pattern; Written Directions for the charts are in the supplemental PDF file that accompanies this pattern.

Construction Notes:
Each block begins with a provisional cast on (PCO). Once the cable pattern is complete, stitches are picked up along each side of the block as well as from the PCO to work the Single Moss Edging. This edging is worked in the round, outward; increases are worked at each of the four corners to help the edging lie flat. Working the edging in this way makes it very easy to join the blocks later.

Blocks may be either bound off (to be sewn together later) or the final round of stitches may be left live (so blocks can be joined using a 3-Needle Bind Off - links to a photo tutorial are included; full instructions for this bind off are not included in this pattern). Directions for both methods are included. Directions are also included for two variations of implementing the 3-Needle Bind Off.

Directions are provided for knitting the Outer Border onto the whole quilt as well as to only a single block.

For the quilt’s Outer Border, stitches are picked up around the entire 9-block quilt; if stitches were left live for the 3-Needle Bind Off option then those stitches are transferred to the working needle. The Outer Border is worked in the round, outward, from those stitches; increases are worked at each of the four corners to help the border lie flat. Additional increases and decreases are worked to accommodate the change in gauges between the various stitch patterns of the Outer Border.

For best results, it is important to have a yarn that blocks well; otherwise, the Outer Border may not lie flat. If you are unsure about your yarn’s properties, working a generous test swatch of the Outer Honeycomb Border pattern and comparing its gauge to your finished, blocked quilt is recommended.

The Outer Border, when worked around an individual block, creates a pillow front 18 x 18” / 45.5 x 45.5cm). Note: Specific instructions for constructing a pillow are not included in this pattern.

Needles
The blocks may be worked on straight needles but a circular needle is required for working the Single Moss Edging around the outside of each block as well as the Outer Border around the entire quilt.

• circular 32” / 81cm
• circular 60” / 152cm (to work the Outer Border for quilt)
• (optional) circular 24” / 61cm to use as a spare needle to pick up PCO sts
• (for 3-Needle Bind Off option only) one DPN

Notions
