A Blanket for Helen
This pattern was reverse engineered from a baby blanket that was made for me half a century ago. While we still have the original blanket, it had been chewed on in ways that meant it is no longer suitable for use. When my daughter had her first baby, my mother and I decided that since we couldn’t give her the ACTUAL ancestral blanket, I would make a new one just like it.
I chose this yarn for it’s lovely softness combined with the washability of acrylic.
While there is one tricky stitch to learn (Central Double Increase), and a provisional cast on, it is otherwise an easy knit, in which the needle sizes do the work of changing the texture. It uses knits, purls, picking up stitches along garter ridges, a provisional cast on (I recommend Judy’s Magic Cast On, since it is invisible and looks just like a regular row in the finished project), and the above mentioned Central Double Increase (which is described). The edging is knitted on, so there’s no seaming involved.
