Ingrid Babbidge
I’d describe myself in a nutshell as a girl living a creative life in the south of England. I’m a textile historian, textile artist, erstwhile museum dweller and of course, a knitter. You may also know me as Ingrid Murnane.
I currently run the yarn department at The Eternal Maker in Chichester, West Sussex where I also teach.
I love to write about knitting and have previously written a column for Simply Knitting and have written articles for knitonthenet, PieceWork magazine and other publications. Although I knit and exhibits art socks that nobody can wear, I do also design more practical garments and accessories sometimes which you can see on my designer page.
I like making things, solving problems and am very inquisitive about the stories behind objects. I love researching and writing about textiles and haberdashery and have a particular interest in the inter-war period, textiles for interiors and craft skills education, and can get very geeky when researching textile techniques of the early 20th century.
I have a BA (Hons) in Textile Art and an MA in the History of Textile and Dress, both from Winchester School of Art, and I wrote my MA dissertation on the teaching and learning of knitting.
I’m an ambassador for the Knitting Reference Library in Winchester and part of the steering committee for @platea, the online performance art collective.
I also like baking cakes, reading 1930s and 40s novels, giggling at Tim Minchin, hula-hooping, listening to podcasts, spinning my own yarn and, of course knitting. Although not always at the same time.
