There is an Edwardian painting by Algernon Telmage in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery called The Mackerel Shawl. I was struck by how contained the woman in the painting appeared, especially due to the goldfish in the bowl next to her. I immediately wanted to design my own Mackerel Shawl and show it outside closer to nature. This is the result.

It is a rectangular shawl with fishtail border knitted first, followed by the body section which has columns of mackerel separated by wave lace.After the body section, the second border is grafted on using Kitchener stitch. Full instructions are included as well as a link to my Youtube video covering the technique.

The project is suitable for knitters who can do ssk, k2tog, yo and SK2P double decrease (Slip 1, k2tog, psso), Kitchener stitch.

Yarn: Triskelion Emrys Lace (800m/100g) using two skeins. The shawl shown here used 1120 m.

Needles: 2.75 mm (US 2) 60 cm long (24 inches), stitch holder or a second circular needle and a tapestry needle. Stitch markers are optional.

Gauge:32 sts and 43 rows measure 10 cm square (4 inches square) in stocking stitch using 2.75 mm needles (US 2) after blocking. 32 sts and 36 rows to 10 cm square (4 inches square) in wave lace pattern (Chart C) using 2.75 mm (US 2) needles after blocking.

Finished size: 45 cm x 185 cm after blocking.

The pattern instructions include both charts and written instructions. This shawl has been test knitted and the pattern tech edited to ensure that your knitting experience is a pleasant one.
