T.A.R.D.I.Socks
As seen at Knit Nation 2011:
Inspired by Dr Who, these knee-high socks are from another Time and Dimension entirely. Featuring a cable and police phonebox pattern with expanded calf with the initials ‘DW’ worked in, these socks are constructed toe-up using easy to follow charts with additional written instructions. Uses a heel flap, short-row and gusset technique for turning the heel. Rated as intermediate for difficulty and suitable for a competent sock knitter.
Not into socks? Have you seen the my T.A.R.D.I.Shawl double pattern?
MATERIALS
200g Sweet Clement Smitten II in Cobalt Blue (4ply superwash merino with 20% nylon).
Set of five 2.75mm double pointed needles or as required to achieve the tension ((if converting to circulars requires 4 st markers placed at the equivalent to the start of each working DPN)
Cable needle
Darning needle
TENSION
35 stitches and 47 rows = 10cm/ 4 inches stocking stitch. Matching row tension is as important as matching st gauge with this pattern as the length of the repeating pattern requires foot sizing to be planned from after the toe.
DIMENSIONS & SIZING
Pattern is written for a UK female size 7 (24cm/ 9.5” long and broad) with a 31cm/ 12” ankle circumference and a maximum calf circumference of 38cm/ 15”, worn snugly. This will also happily accommodate the more slender foot and calf of my model but can be altered if necessary (instructions given). Various shoe size converters have given a UK size 7 to range from a US size 8-9.5 so please base your calculations for change of size on the cm/ “ dimensions given.
Please note that using alternative yarn to the original specified may change the elasticity of your finished sock and result in it not fitting as intended by the designer.
14-05-12 Please note that this pattern is toe-up and requires an accurate row gauge to ensure that the size of the foot (determined at the start) is adequate to your needs. Pattern has been updated with additional ‘fudge’ steps that can be worked at the ankle to alter the length of the foot without frustrating frogging but these will alter the length of the vortex over the ankle so that it does not match the rest of the leg. If you wish to avoid complicated sizing issues commence Chart A from Row 18 at the toe and work repeats of row 1-6 after the end of Chart A until the foot is long enough to start on the heel flap - this will give a variable length vortex between the foot TARDIS and the subsequent ankle TARDIS but makes for an easier resize.
Converting pattern to 2 circulars or magic loop - it is recommended that you use stitch markers to delineate the equivalent of 4dpns when knitting on circulars so that you can match the instructions to the sections of the sock and follow more easily through gusset decrease (st counts are given per dpn rather than in total).
It is not recommended that these socks be knit on 4 dpns.
