This shawl was born out of the question: Can a circular shawl become less traditionally “feminine” in shape and become a piece that morphs into gender fluidity and neutrality? The answer? Yes!

Traditionally, art has defined “feminine” shapes as curves, softer, and more sensual in form, whereas a more “masculine” shape would be angular, sharp, and powerful in contrast. By taking these principles, this shawl came to take shape!

Using traditional Pi-Shaping technique to start the piece, this shawl gradually morphs into a more angular and masculine form that uses color blocking and short rows to accentuate the stripes, while creating a synthesis of both feminine and masculine forms that convert the overall shape into a neutral form.

Size: 72 inches at the widest point. Size varies depending on yarns used, blocking techniques, and knitter’s individuality!

Recommended yarn: 4 colors of fingering weight yarn in solid/semi-solid/tonal/lightly variegated or speckled yarns. Sample used Anzula Cloud (80% Merino/10% Cashmere/10% Nylon; 575 yd / 526 m) in the color way Black (MC1) and Hedgehog Fibres Sock (90 % Merino/ 10% Nylon; 437 yd / 400 m) in the color ways Typewriter (MC2), Wink (C1), and Steven Beyond (C2).

Yardage: MC1: 675 yd / 617 m; MC2: 420 yd / 384 m; C1: 420 yd / 384 m; C2: 420 yd / 384 m

Needles: One set US size 6 DPNs for the start of the shawl; One set of US size 6/4.0 mm 32 inch circular needles; One set of US size 6/4.0 mm 40-47 inch circular needles.

Gauge: 5 sts to the inch on US 6/4.0 mm needles. Gauge is not crucial to the project. Feel free to use whatever needle combination that gives you the best drape and feel for the project.
