Sonic Boom
This cowl uses the möbius shape to advantage in several ways.
- long-print yarns or magic ball will automatically produce symmetrical stripes
- crests and troughs in the lace pattern align
- the shape is flattering to wear
- you can knit until you run out of yarn — perfect for stash-busting!
Techniques:
Cast-on is a möbius lace cast-on.
Pattern is a welted feather and fan.
Bind off with Jeny’s Surprsingly Stretchy Bind-off.

Available in 2 file formats!
Which file should you download?
Booklet file is half-sheet formatted to print as a center-staple booklet if you:
print 2 pages to a side
print on both sides of each leaf
print on margin-less 8.5 x 11 inch paper
(If you’ve taken a class with the designer after June 2012, this is the same format as her class handouts.)
The center will be a piece of paper that has pages 2 & 3 face up, and pages 4 & 1 face down.
Cover (possibly heavier paper) on bottom.
E-book file is half-sheet formatted but with all the pages in normal order and the blank inside covers deleted.
If you have a smaller tablet or you read off your smart phone, you shouldn’t have to zoom as much. You can also print this size if you print on 5.5 x 8 inch paper — i.e. half-sheet.
Errata: Apparently, I can’t tell the difference between 11 and 13. My sample was 6.5 multiples of pattern which becomes 13. So the cast-on was 104 which becomes 312. Version 1.2 of the pattern includes this change. I’ve also added Knitter’s magazine issue 118 (Spring 2015) to the bibliography, as that issue will give you four other cast-on methods if Cat Bordhi’s method doesn’t suit you.
