Sonia is my grandmother and she taught me how to knit. Sonia has never used expensive yarn in her life and yet she knits the most beautiful garments. Thanks to her I learned that I don’t need any fancy materials to make beautiful things. All I require is love, perseverance, time and knowledge. And that’s exactly what the Sonia shawl is about.
This shawl is inspired by my grandma lessons and I believe it will be helpful for any beginner knitter who feels the urge to try something new and just a bit more challenging.
This shawl uses stockinette stitch, eyelets, bobbles, color changes and a special lace pattern. But don’t be afraid! I tried to use them in the simplest way possible, making sure to progressively advance in difficulty so you can learn as you go.
The Sonia shawl is knitted top down in the flat, as a triangle shape. It consists of six sections: the first one is made using stockinette stitch. Then it morphs into an eyelet pattern. Later comes a bit of a challenge in the bobbles/garter stitch section, followed by another lace section spiced up with a color change. Then you’ll find a special lace pattern that you can accomplish by following either the written instructions or the charted pattern. Finally there’s a ribbed ruffle where you can show off your favorite color.
Thanks to all the talented knitters who tested this pattern!
FIBER CHOICE
I encourage you to use natural fibers because they tend to block better. Wool, alpaca or any animal blend will do just fine. You will be better avoiding vegetable fibers as cotton or linen, because the stitches don’t show off as nicely and they tend to have a drape that’s not too suitable for this. This patterns works well with a solid yarn as a base color, and either solid, speckled, self-stripping or variegated as the secondary colors.
YARN WEIGHT
I made two shawls, one with unlabelled sport weight yarn that I hand dyed (the one with pink ruffles in the main picture) and a second one using Katia’s Merino Baby (navy blue and teal picture). You’ll need between 700-750 yards/ 640 - 685 meters, You can also knit a shawlette if you use fingering weight instead, or a bigger shawl with a dk or worsted one. Try experimnting with different weights to obtain different sizes!
