Solstice Mittens For Five
Make a pile of these easy, cute and colorful mittens and keep all your little friends warm and happy this winter!
Sizes range from Baby to Child, with a thumbless option for the littlest ones.
There are two pattern charts to choose from in each size and the color options are limited only by your imagination. These are a quick project and are a great way to use up odds and ends of DK and sport weight yarn.
There are never more than 2 colors in a round, and no long floats to worry about. Also, the colorwork section is limited to the main part of the hand and does not have to be considered in the decrease or thumb sections.
SIZES: Baby (Toddler, Child)
Additional sizes can be made by adding length to the hand and thumb, or by making a longer cuff. Changes in gauge will also result in additional size options. Be sure to have extra yarn on hand if you plan to make changes.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Circumference: 4.5 (5, 6) inches
Length: 5 (6, 7) inches; adjustable
Changes to gauge or yarn weight, or adding length, may require extra yarn
GAUGE: 24 sts and 30 rnds = 4”/10cm on gauge size needles (over blocked colorwork pattern).
NEEDLES:
US 5 (3.75mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
US 4 (3.5mm), or one size smaller than gauge needle
Choose needle types base on your preferred method of working small circumferences in the round. Options include magic-loop on a 32-inch circular needle, DPNs, or 2 24-inch circular needles.
YARN: DK or Sport Weight Yarn that knits to gauge.
Choose 4 shades—2 light, 2 dark
Amounts needed: Baby (Toddler, Child)
15 (20, 30) yards of EACH of the 4 shades PLUS 25 (30, 40) additional yards of the shade chosen for the cuff.
Extra yarn may be needed if adding length to the cuff.
NOTIONS: 2 stitch markers, a length of smooth yarn for a holder, tapestry needle
SKILLS USED: working in the round, decreases (k2tog), increases (M1) using a chart, 2-color colorwork
