✨ The Story Behind Your Next Knit
I had the pleasure to call San Angelo, Texas my home for about a year. This small Texas city is steeped in rich history and a surprising art scene. While living there, I fell in love with mesquite artwork inlaid with turquoise. There is something magical about this combination.
This fun triangular shawl is named after that magical combination, and it’s worked from the center out featuring short rows, wrapped stitches, and a fun mosaic colorwork motif. It’s a fantastic way to dive into those techniques without getting overwhelmed!

🧶 Quick Highlights:
- Difficulty: Intermediate (knowledge of short rows and mosaic colorwork is helpful, but the pattern aims to make it fun, not frustrating!).
- Techniques: Garter tab cast-on, standard increases/decreases, short rows, wrapped stitches, and mosaic colorwork.
- Construction: Worked from the center out, creating a versatile triangular shawl.
- Special Features: Playful short rows, intriguing wrapped stitches, eye-catching mosaic colorwork motif, versatile triangular shape.
- Yarn Weight: Fingering weight.
📐 Sizes & Finished Measurements:
- Size: One size
- Actual Measurements:
- Depth: 30” (76 cm)
- Length Along Top Edge: 60” (152 cm)
- Tip: Exact gauge is not critical, but because the shawl requires nearly the entire skein of each color, deviation from the gauge will affect the final size of the shawl and yarn requirements. Knit a swatch, friend!
🧶 Yarn Requirements:
- Recommended Yarn: Tosh Sock by Madelinetosh; 100 % SW Merino; 395 yds (361 m); 100 g (3.53 oz); Fingering Weight
- One skein each in:
- MC: “Rye Bourbon” 2 skeins (approximately 770 yds (704 m); 195 g (6.88 oz) needed)
- CC: “Hosta Blue” 1 skein (approximately 395 yds (361 m); 88 g (3.1 oz) needed)
- Or a similar fingering weight yarn. Choose solid or mostly solid colored yarn that has good stitch definition and select colors that have enough contrast to allow the colorwork to stand out.
🥢 Needles:
- US 5 (3.75 mm) and US 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles, or size to obtain gauge at least 40” (102 cm) long
✂️ Notions:
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
- Stitch markers (38 total with 4 unique markers for those key spots!)
📏 Gauge:
- 20 Sts / 36 Rows = 4” / 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch using US 5 (3.75 mm) needles after wet blocking
- Exact gauge is not critical, but because the shawl requires nearly the entire skein of each color, deviation from the gauge will affect the size of the shawl and yarn requirements.
