Goodyear, B. F. Goodrich, Firestone and General Tire! In Akron, Ohio and the surrounding areas until the 1990’s tires ruled. Almost everyone was connected in one way or another to the tire industry, including my family. It gave us a stable income and a good education. The process of rubber vulcanization was taught in grade school. Seeing the Goodyear Blimp fly was an everyday occurrence for us. I can still recognize the sound of one!

In my first apartment near one of the plants I would wake up every morning to the smell of rubber and black soot on my car. We complained about it then. The tire industry has since moved and I suspect the smell and the soot would be welcomed back. It meant economic growth and prosperity. The city of Akron has moved on to become the city of invention with a focus on polymers. For me, it will always be Rubber City, USA. The socks are knit from cuff to toe with a “tire tread” design. They are fast, fun, easy and a delightful knit.
