Rainbow Trout
The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a species of freshwater fish, introduced to New Zealand waterways in the 1800’s.
In modern times we find Rainbow Trout in our Central North Island, and also following the length of the Southern Alps mountain range in the South Island, where it is caught by recreational fishers.
Rainbow Trout has been updated on January 1st 2014, and is now a seamless pattern that comes in 8 sizes (from newborn to adult), 2 hat lengths (beanie or slouch), and in 3 yarn weights (4ply/fingering, 8ply/dk, and 10ply/worsted).
CONSTRUCTION
Rainbow Trout is a slouchy beanie knit in the round.
The pattern has you casting on and working a ribbed brim.
Once the brim is complete the body of the hat is worked in a simple slip stitch pattern, reminiscent of fish scales.
The crown decreases are made without incorporating the body stitch pattern to make it an easy and pleasurable knit.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Knitting small circumferences in the round
Mykiss is the sibling pattern to Rainbow Trout - a double looped cowl featuring the same stitch pattern.
The Rainbow Trout pattern was designed in April 2013 for the July ‘Water Showcase’, hosted by the Yarnification page on Facebook.com.
