These socks are the first in a series of free sock patterns that I designed to match my four free shawl patterns.

This sock pattern was written for double pointed needles and has instructions for a Medium sized sock only - 64 stitches.

This is a cuff down sock pattern, worked in one piece, from the cuff down to the toe. Casting on requires using a stretchy cast-on method. The cuff of the socks is knitted first, before moving onto the leg, the heel, the gusset, then the foot and finally finishing on the toe. Kitchener stitch is used to close the stitches at the toe.

Instructions for the leg, gusset and foot of these socks are provided in both written and charted format. However, instructions for the cuff, heel and toe are written only.

These socks would be ideal for intermediate sock knitters who would like to try lace knitting. The design for these socks was inspired by my Old Shale Shawl. For some time now, I have wanted to design sock patterns that would match my four free shawl patterns. The thought of knitting lace can be slightly daunting to some knitters, but this is a very straight forward lace pattern to follow: there are only four rounds in this pattern
repeat and only one of these four is a pattern round. I’m also hoping to help knitters understand how cuff down socks with a traditional gusset develop with this very simple yet elegant sock pattern.
