This pattern is a spin on the popular knit version of thrummed mittens, but YES, you can also make crocheted thrummed mittens, too!

Thrummed mittens have been around for a couple of hundred years in Northern Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. The term “thrum” refers to yarn waste that is left over from weaving looms. And it was these leftovers that were then knit into garments, in particular mittens, for adding warmth.

There’s such a wide variety of dyed wool roving available these days, so you can choose a rainbow of colors to make your thrums -- the choices are endless.

This pattern is suitable for an advanced beginner, however I have included step-by-step photographs, as well as a video tutorial, to make following the instructions as easy as possible.
